My secret dinner

24 January 2010

On Friday night I had a password and a Kilburn address and that's all I knew about the evening's entertainment. I'd booked two places at a 'secret restaurant' having read about them online. So me and my mate Darling went off to see what it was all about.

When we arrived at the door, one of the waitresses was having a fag and ushered us through. No password needed then. Mildly disappointed, though it was in Spanish and I had been concerned that my pronounciation may earn a few sniggers.

We were expecting it all to be a bit uber cool but the vast majority of diners were just like us - slightly underdressed and a bit nervous. Rather than sit at a table that already had people on it, we took an empty table by the window and waited for people to come to us. Eventually a lovely young man in a diamante bracelet and his beautiful Sri Lankan flatmate came to sit with us. They were secret dining virgins too, so we all giggled and chatted in anticipation.

The first course - pickled sea bass - was to die for. The theme of our evening was In the Realm of the Senses and the menu didn't disappoint. A fabulous curry followed which we ate with our fingers. Then came the smelly course. Durian fruit and Stinking Bishop cheese. It did make me gag a bit, I'll admit, and my fingers reeked for a good 24 hours afterwards. But interesting nonetheless.

Sadly at this point my ratio of food to wine fell out of kilter. As the restaurant has no license we brought our own booze and paid a modest £5 per bottle corkage charge. Darling and I had tanked the first bottle before the starter arrived and the second was a killer 15% so I suddenly crashed. It was time to go - I unceremoniously left my friend to finish her meal whilst I legged it for fresh air and the last tube home. Sorry, Sarah.

The final course, it turns out, was served with blindfolds. The guests were then given a pudding that contained popping candy. I'm gutted I missed it.

The restaurant nights are run by Ms. Marmite Lover and can be booked through We Got Tickets. She was a fabulous welcoming host who provided great food and a warm atmosphere. I'd thoroughly recommend it. Just go easy on the wine.
